The Unimog was built in 1983. It was purchased and registered by Interatom
International Atomreaktorbau GmbH, 5060 Bergisch Gladbach, Germany
on 3rd November 1983 for Siemens and
used by them for the testing
of solar
panels,
a source of power for the daily running of campers. The Unimog was fitted
with at least two panels, the large one (which takes up about a quarter
of the roof area) was situated over the camper itself and the secondary
one was installed on the roof of the drivers cabin (utilising about a quarter
of this area).
As
solar panels need sunlight as the energy source and the supply not being
plentiful or constant in northern Europe, most of the trials
took place in North Africa and the Middle East. So the early life of
the Unimog was spent there where most of the testing took place. The
camper was fitted with a lot of diagnostic equipment, that filled up
most
of the internal camper space. All in all, this testing took approximately
two years and then the Unimog was put up for sale after attending a number
of exhibitions.
The second owner was a Belgian gentleman from Brussels. The car was registered
in Belgium after being imported on 27th January 1987. He used the Unimog as
a camper
from
then
on through
to
1992. He travelled mainly in Europe and North Africa. Most of the trips during
this
period
were
of relatively
short duration.
In 1992, it was purchased by Jan (a Dutchman, presently living in Ireland).
The
camper
was eventually imported into Ireland and is currently registered as an Irish
vehicle.
During it's life with Jan, it has covered many kilometres.
On the countries visited page,
this list of countries visited on the 2002/3 trip are mentioned. Our
plans and hopes for the future: are to visit
South
America. The date has
yet
to be
decided
upon. Only time will tell.....
