Global Overlanders

Introduction:

Jan and Claire have been travelling together now for over twelve (12) years. Both had their careers in the Aviation industry. Jan is Dutch and Claire is Irish. When they first met, they were experienced aviation travellers. Jan already had some experience of overland travel using his favourite 4X4 heavy duty overland vehicle namely the 'Unimog'. Not long after they met, Claire was introduced to the Unimogand found it daunting. Jan inaugurated Claire into a more robust mode of travel on their first overland trip together, which was in South Africa in a rented camper.

They spent several weeks travelling around this beautiful country and both became more used to the lack of hotel comforts and city facilities or sun, beach and sand resorts while travelling out in the bush and visiting more remote locations than the average tourist undertakes. The route they took on this trip was as follows: starting in Johannesburg, we went down to Durban via Kwazulu-Natal. Next they travelled south along the 'Garden Route' all the way to Captetown. From there they headed northwest to Saldanha Bay. Turning eastwards, they cut inland and continued North through the Karoo National Park to Kimberley. After a short break in the journey they continued on in a northerly direction to Pretoria and visited the capital city before venturing south again, to Johanesburg for the return flight to Europe.

Mongolia Trip........

The following pages, provide information and photographs about one of our overland trips that we undertook in 2002-2003 from Europe to Central Asia and back again. We hope our trip will provide some insight to our experiences and encourage you to venture forth and travel overland to some exotic location at some stage in the future.
